Robin Roberts joins shoe charity founder in Haiti to discuss relief efforts
Soles4Souls, the shoe charity dedicated to giving shoes to people in need, was featured prominently on the August 24th edition of ABC’s “Good Morning America.” In the segment, Robin Roberts follows Soles4Souls CEO Wayne Elsey as he distributes shoes at an orphanage in Port Au Prince, Haiti. After the January 8.0 magnitude earthquake that devastated much of the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country, Soles4Souls offered sustained relief through their commitment of more than 1 million pairs of shoes. Robin Roberts announced that Soles4Souls has already distributed 1 million pairs in less than 9 months.
“What we want to do is put shoes on these kids’ feet,” said Elsey while lacing up a pair of athletic shoes on a local orphan’s foot. “Let them know that they’re important, that they matter and that there will be a better day for them soon.”
The segment also highlights Soles4Souls efforts to utilize supplies already available in Haiti to build affordable housing throughout the distressed country. Elsey discusses his idea to transform shipping containers into multi-room housing for the more than 1.5 million people living under tarps in Port-Au-Prince’s Tent City.
